An interactive visualization about the persecution of "the denied" during the Nazi era

The mission of the Foundation Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe initially comprised the erection and maintenance of the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in the center of Berlin. In the meantime, the foundation looks after four other memorials and commemorates the National Socialist crimes and the people affected throughout Europe in numerous exhibitions and publications.

The website "die-verleugneten.de" focuses on the biographies of people who were branded and persecuted by the National Socialists as "asocials" and "professional criminals". For the existing website, we developed an interactive 3D visualization - The Web of Persecution - which interactively visualizes the various stages of persecution in the biographies of those affected.

WebGL & ThreeJS

Our 3D visualization is based on WebGL (Web Graphics Library), a JavaScript API that makes it possible to display 3D graphics in web browsers without additional plugins. The JavaScript library "3D Force-Directed Graph", which is based on ThreeJS, is used for network visualization.

REST API

The data records of the tracked persons and tracking stations are retrieved from a central Laravel CMS via a REST interface.

Certain terms in the description texts are also explained via a glossary using popovers. The contents of the glossary are also read directly from the existing Wordpress instance of the denied website via an interface.

In memory of the victims of the Shoah

Foundation Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

The Foundation Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe was established in 2000 for the purpose of commemorating the victims of the Shoah. The foundation's central project is the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin, which commemorates the systematic extermination of the Jews. The foundation is also involved in educational and research projects. Its work plays an important role in coming to terms with Germany's National Socialist history.
